Cancer can develop in almost any part of the body, and its symptoms can sometimes resemble those of other conditions. When cancer is suspected because of symptoms, an abnormal screening result, or a physical examination, doctors use a combination of medical history, laboratory tests, imaging, and tissue examination to determine the cause. There is no single test that can diagnose every type of cancer.
Understanding the commonly used Cancer diagnosis tests can help patients know what to expect during an evaluation and why a doctor may recommend more than one test.
Cancer Screening vs. Cancer Diagnosis
Cancer screening and diagnosis are related but different processes. Screening is generally performed in people who do not have symptoms to look for certain cancers at an early stage. Diagnostic testing is performed when symptoms, an abnormal screening result, or another finding requires further investigation.
For example, an abnormal mammogram does not necessarily mean a person has breast cancer. Additional diagnostic tests, which may include imaging or a biopsy, may be needed to determine the cause.
10 Important Tests and Scans Used in Cancer Diagnosis
- Physical Examination and Medical History
Cancer evaluation often begins with a detailed discussion about symptoms, medical history, family history, lifestyle factors, and previous illnesses. The doctor may also perform a physical examination to look for unusual lumps, swelling, skin changes, enlarged lymph nodes, or other signs.
This initial assessment helps determine which further investigations may be appropriate.
- Blood Tests
Blood tests for cancer can provide information about blood cells, organ function, inflammation, and certain substances associated with particular cancers.
A complete blood count, for example, measures red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin, and other blood components. It can help doctors identify abnormalities and is particularly useful in evaluating some blood cancers. Blood chemistry tests can also provide information about organs such as the liver and kidneys.
However, abnormal blood results do not automatically mean that a person has cancer. Similarly, normal blood results cannot always rule out cancer.
- Ultrasound
Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of internal organs and tissues. It is commonly used to examine areas such as the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, breast, and other soft tissues.
Doctors may use ultrasound to investigate an abnormality found during an examination or to help distinguish between fluid-filled and solid areas. It can also be used to guide certain biopsy procedures.
- X-Ray
X-rays use a small amount of radiation to produce images of structures inside the body. A chest X-ray, for example, may help doctors evaluate abnormalities in the lungs or chest.
Although more advanced imaging techniques are often required for detailed evaluation, X-rays can sometimes provide useful initial information and may lead to further testing.
- CT Scan
A CT scan for cancer uses computer-controlled X-rays to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the body. These images can help doctors identify the location and size of a suspicious mass and assess nearby structures.
A contrast material may sometimes be used to make particular organs, blood vessels, or abnormal areas easier to see.
CT imaging can also contribute to cancer staging by helping doctors determine whether a cancer may have spread to other parts of the body.
- MRI Scan
An MRI scan for cancer uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of organs and soft tissues. MRI can be particularly useful when doctors need a clearer view of certain areas, such as the brain, spinal cord, pelvis, muscles, or other soft tissues.
Depending on the examination, a contrast agent may be given to improve the visibility of certain abnormalities.
MRI does not use X-ray radiation, but patients with certain implanted medical devices or metal objects may need special evaluation before the scan.
- PET Scan
A PET scan for cancer is a type of nuclear imaging examination that shows areas of increased metabolic activity in the body. A small amount of radioactive tracer is administered, and the scanner detects its distribution.
Cancer cells often use more glucose than many normal cells, which can make some tumours appear as areas of increased activity on PET imaging. PET is often combined with CT to provide information about both metabolic activity and anatomical structure.
PET imaging can be useful for detecting certain cancers, assessing the extent of disease, evaluating treatment response, and investigating possible recurrence.
- Endoscopy
Endoscopy for cancer diagnosis allows doctors to examine the inside of certain organs using a thin, flexible or specialised instrument equipped with a camera.
Depending on the suspected condition, doctors may perform procedures such as:
- Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
- Colonoscopy
- Bronchoscopy
- Cystoscopy
- Other specialised endoscopic examinations
Endoscopy can allow doctors to directly visualise an abnormal area and, when required, collect a tissue sample for laboratory examination.
- Biopsy
A Biopsy for cancer involves removing a sample of tissue or cells from a suspicious area so that it can be examined by a pathologist.
A biopsy can be performed in different ways depending on the location of the suspected abnormality. It may involve:
- A needle
- Endoscopy
- Minor or major surgery
- Image-guided tissue sampling
In many situations, examining tissue under a microscope is necessary to confirm whether cancer is present. The pathology report can also provide important information about the type and characteristics of the cancer.
A cancer biopsy may therefore play a central role in confirming a suspected diagnosis and helping doctors determine appropriate treatment.
- Molecular and Genetic Tests
Modern cancer care may also involve laboratory tests that examine genes, chromosomes, proteins, or other characteristics of tumour cells.
These tests can sometimes help identify the specific subtype of cancer or genetic changes within tumour cells. Such information may help doctors select treatments that are appropriate for a particular cancer.
The type of molecular testing recommended depends on the suspected or confirmed cancer and the information needed for treatment planning.
Why Doctors May Recommend Multiple Cancer Detection Tests
Doctors may recommend several cancer detection tests because each test provides different information.
For example:
- Blood tests can provide information about blood cells and organ function.
- Ultrasound can identify abnormalities in soft tissues.
- CT and MRI can show the location and characteristics of suspicious areas.
- PET can provide information about metabolic activity.
- Endoscopy can allow direct visual examination of certain organs.
- Biopsy can provide tissue confirmation.
- Molecular testing can provide information about tumour characteristics.
Using several sources of information allows the medical team to build a clearer picture of the disease and, when cancer is confirmed, determine its extent and characteristics.
Does a Positive Test Always Mean Cancer?
No. An abnormal screening or diagnostic test does not automatically mean that cancer is present.
Imaging findings can sometimes be caused by infections, inflammation, benign growths, or other conditions. Similarly, laboratory results may be abnormal for reasons unrelated to cancer.
This is why doctors interpret test results alongside symptoms, medical history, physical examination, imaging findings, and pathology results. Screening tests can also produce false-positive and false-negative results.
What Happens After Cancer Is Confirmed?
Once cancer has been confirmed, doctors may recommend additional tests to determine its stage. Staging describes factors such as the size of the tumour and whether it has spread to other parts of the body.
Depending on the cancer, further testing may include:
- Additional imaging
- Lymph node evaluation
- Molecular or genetic testing
- Blood investigations
- Organ-function tests
The results help the cancer care team develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Can a Full Body Health Checkup Detect Cancer?
Routine health assessments can help identify certain health abnormalities and may include examinations or tests based on age, sex, risk factors, and medical history. However, no single health package can reliably detect every type of cancer.
People should discuss their individual risk factors with a doctor rather than if a routine package rules out cancer. Full-body health checkup packages may be useful for general health assessment, but cancer-specific screening should be based on established screening recommendations and individual risk.
When Should You See a Doctor?
You should consult a doctor if you have persistent or unexplained symptoms such as:
- An unexplained lump or swelling
- Unusual bleeding
- Persistent cough or hoarseness
- Unexplained weight loss
- Changes in bowel or bladder habits
- Persistent abdominal discomfort
- Changes in a mole or skin lesion
- Difficulty swallowing
- Persistent or unexplained pain
- Unexplained prolonged fatigue
These symptoms can have many causes other than cancer. However, persistent changes should be medically evaluated rather than ignored.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first test doctors perform when cancer is suspected?
The evaluation usually begins with a medical history and physical examination. Based on the findings, doctors may recommend blood tests, imaging, endoscopy, biopsy, or other investigations.
Can a blood test confirm cancer?
Most blood tests cannot confirm cancer on their own. They can provide useful information and may support diagnosis, but additional tests, including imaging or tissue examination, may be necessary.
Which scan is better for detecting cancer: CT or MRI?
Neither scan is universally better. The appropriate imaging method depends on the suspected cancer, the body part being examined, and the information the doctor needs.
Is a PET scan used for every cancer?
No. PET scans are not required for every type of cancer or every patient. Their usefulness depends on the suspected or confirmed cancer and the purpose of the examination.
Is a biopsy always required to diagnose cancer?
A biopsy is often needed to confirm cancer because it allows a pathologist to examine cells or tissue directly. However, the exact diagnostic approach varies depending on the suspected cancer and clinical circumstances.
What is the difference between screening and diagnostic testing?
Screening generally looks for cancer in people without symptoms, while diagnostic testing investigates symptoms, abnormal screening results, or other findings that require further evaluation.
Can cancer be detected during a routine health checkup?
Some cancers or risk factors may be identified during appropriate screening or routine medical evaluation. However, a routine health checkup cannot rule out every type of cancer.
What happens if an imaging scan shows a suspicious tumour?
The doctor may recommend additional imaging, laboratory tests, an endoscopic examination, or tissue sampling. The next step depends on the location and characteristics of the abnormality.
Why are cancer tests sometimes repeated?
Tests may be repeated to confirm findings, obtain additional information, monitor changes, or assess treatment response. The reason depends on the patient’s individual situation.
How can I consult a cancer specialist?
You can discuss your symptoms or test results with an oncology team and carry relevant medical records and previous reports to the consultation. Patients can also Book an appointment online through the hospital’s appointment facility.
