It consists of a team of highly skilled surgeons with extensive experience in operating GI cancer patients. Most gastro-intestinal cancers (esophagus, stomach, large intestine, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, etc.) are curable if detected early, and surgery is the main treatment modality for them (curative surgery). The department performs a full range of these curative gastro-intestinal cancer surgeries with high precision and efficiency.
Minimal access surgeries are completed with one or more small incisions instead of a large incision, with the help of a video camera-enabled scope. This helps in early patient recovery, decreased side effects, small surgical scars and better disease outcomes.
The team performs liver transplant surgery for liver cancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma) as well. The scope of the surgeries performed also includes surgeries to help in relieving symptoms of advanced cancer (Palliative Surgery).
The Department of GI Surgical Oncology strongly believes in providing holistic care to our patients in order to give them the best chances for disease cure or symptom palliation. The department has excellent collaboration with our outstanding colleagues in the Department of Gastroenterology, Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Medical Oncology, Department of Radiology and Interventional Radiology Service, Department of Dietetics and Nutrition, and Department of Pathology; this includes shared clinical care as well as participation in multidisciplinary disease management tumour board meetings.
